Frequently Asked Questions
Can your dehumidifiers stop mould/mildew, musty odours and condensation?
Yes! By drying out your home with the correct model dehumidifier you can eliminate and stop these common problems from returning for good.
Can a dehumidifier help with allergies?
Yes! Mould, dust mites and pests are common allergens. By drying your home and controlling humidity you can eliminate and/or reduce these problems. Our NWT models are approved by the Australian National Asthma Councils’ Sensitive Choice Program.
Compressor or Desiccant dehumidifier; which one do I need?
Compressor dehumidifiers still retain top spot as the most popular on the market, particularly when the indoor temperature is around 20°C or above. But if your indoor temperature is often below 20°c, then consider the newer Desiccant type dehumidifiers as a great option. They may be rated as having a lower overall moisture removal capacity, but they can outperform the compressor type in lower winter temperatures.
Please see Comparison Chart Below to help guide you in your decision.
How do I select the right size dehumidifier?
One of the most important points to consider when purchasing a dehumidifier is to make sure it is powerful enough to do the job. All dehumidifiers collect water however to really solve moisture related problem such as mould, musty odours etc. a dehumidifier must have enough power or water extraction to sufficiently dry everything within the room. This includes drying it structurally. See below for an easy step-by-step guide.Dehumidifier Size Guide
1 - Measure the largest room* you want to dry (length x width = square meters) then that will determine the minimum (smallest) size model dehumidifier to choose.
2 - All our dehumidifiers’ specifications have an ‘up to’ recommended room size†. Select the model dehumidifier that has at least an equal or higher recommendation e.g. your room measures 25 square meters, therefore the minimum model size will be the NWT Medium dehumidifier which has a recommended room size up to 30 square meters.
3 - If you want to maintain dryness in multiple rooms then just add the rooms’ measurements together and select the appropriate size dehumidifier
*If you have an open plan living area e.g. kitchen, dining and living room, that have no doors, you will need to combine the total area of all rooms. Stairwells will also have to be taken into consideration.
†Our recommended room size is the floor area measured in square meters with average height ceilings (approx. 2.5m). If you have extra high ceilings you will need to consider a dehumidifier with a larger recommended room size.
Are your dehumidifiers suited to Australian conditions?
Yes, Ausclimate have taken the ‘above and beyond’ steps of appointing an Australian owned government accredited company to independently test each model type to ensure they are safe, efficient and satisfy Australian industry standards. These tests involve full dismantle and test of all relevant components to give you confidence as you consider your purchase.
How long should I run the dehumidifier for?
This will depend on whether you’re using your dehumidifier to solve a moisture related problem or maintaining a dry home or just managing humidity levels.Safety tip: Remember, electrical appliances should not be left running unattended for extended periods.
Can I use a dehumidifier as a clothes dryer?
Yes, the outward flow of air from the dehumidifier can be directed onto your clothes horse or ‘airer’. A smaller room with doors and windows closed will also improve the effectiveness of the drying operation – the laundry ideal. Our dehumidifiers can be more economical than using a typical electric dryer.Safety tip: remember to hang the clothing at least 50cm from the unit.
How much does a dehumidifier cost to run?
Ausclimate’s dehumidifiers are inexpensive to operate. Depending on the model, running costs can compare with computers, TVs and fridges and small air conditioners. As example, the ‘Small 12L’ dehumidifier will cost you 5.5c per hour(2018 QLD electricity rates – 26cents/KWhour x 210W = 5.5cents/hour).
Are they easy to move around?
Yes, our dehumidifiers are made of light-weight hard wearing materials and are very mobile. Our lighter models such as the NWT Compact and the Ausclimate Cool Seasons 7 & 10L have a carry handle whilst all remaining models have castor wheels for easy mobility.
Are they noisy?
No, depending on the dehumidifier model the noise level varies from as low as 37dBA up to 55dBA. This is comparable to a typical pedestal household fan for smaller models up to an air conditioner for our most powerful unit, the Supreme All Seasons 50L.
Can the water bucket overflow if I'm not home?
No. All our models have a water float which is triggered to turn the dehumidifier off when the bucket is full.
Does the dehumidifier require any maintenance or cleaning?
Occasional cleaning will extend the life of your dehumidifier, particularly if it is used regularly. The air filter retains dust and other materials from the air and we recommend it be cleaned every few weeks after regular use for optimal moisture removal efficiency*. Refer to the user manual for maintenance instructions.*Commercial use or dusty environments: extra cleaning will be necessary. When used in fine dusty environments it is recommended to have additional cleaning done by an approved electrical repairer.
Does it matter if I purchase a dehumidifier that's too small?
Yes, the unit may be overworked by running continuously. To reduce humidity to an acceptable level or to dry a room sufficiently a dehumidifier must be powerful enough to reduce the rooms’ moisture level to approximately 50%.
What is ‘Hot Gas Defrost’?
Our Supreme All Seasons 50L dehumidifier has a ‘Hot Gas’ defrost system. This allows the unit to perform more effectively in cooler indoor climates. It is a very fast and efficient way to defrost a dehumidifier therefore providing effective operation at low ambient temperatures.
Will the dehumidifier make our rooms warmer in summer?
Yes, moderately. Depending on the type of dehumidifier i.e. compressor or desiccant it may increase the temperature in the room by a few degrees. The extent to which the room temperature may rise will also depend on the size of the room, the rooms’ initial temperature and the amount of time the dehumidifier is operating i.e. the longer it runs the more warm air it produces.Note: Desiccant type dehumidifiers can produce more warm air than compressor types in warmer temperatures.
Can I use the dehumidifier while my air conditioner is running?
Yes, it can be very beneficial. If the area you want to dehumidify has a refrigerant type air conditioner it will almost double the coverage of the dehumidifier.
Won’t the dehumidifier heat make my air conditioner work harder and longer?
No. It is easier to cool or heat dry air than humid air therefore the air conditioner will work more efficiently.
Do I need a surge protector?
It is recommended that electrical appliances have surge protectors. Your warranty does not cover power fluctuations.
What is relative humidity and what level should it be?
Relative humidity (RH) is the amount of water vapour in the air. It is expressed as a percentage of the maximum of water that can be held in the air at any given temperature. The RH level that best suits your health and comfort is about 50%.
