Is EMF Exposure Harmful? A Guide to EMF Protection in Australia

Technology is undeniably a great thing. What is EMF?

Electromagnetic Frequencies, otherwise known as EMF or radiation, refers to the energy created by a circuit in an electronic device. This circuit requires an electric current to pass through it for the electronic device to be able to perform a function, thus creating EMF or radiation as a by-product of this process. These energy fields travel mostly in waves, with the different wave levels ordered together on the electromagnetic radiation spectrum.

As can be seen above, there are two broad categories of electromagnetic radiation: ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation.

Ionizing radiation (IR)

IR is directly harmful to cells, and exposure should be minimised as much as possible. An Atomic bomb would be an extreme example of this type of radiation.

Non-Ionizing radiation (NIR)

NIR is much lower energy, and some argue that it is safe for that reason. While cell damage is not immediately seen with this type of radiation, that does not mean that there are no long term consequences from repeated exposure, with more and more studies illustrating that long term exposure can contribute to oxidative stress and cellular damage.

What are the different types of EMF?

Electronic devices emit two different types of radiation, Extremely low Frequency (ELF) and Radio Frequency (RF). RF is the more commonly discussed, although both are worth mentioning given they can present certain challenges.  

ELF: Electronic devices have either a plug or battery that generates an electric current to power the individual components of the device. Low levels of radiation is leaked from this power source and this radiation is appropriately named Extremely Low Frequency Radiation. This type of radiation does not go very far, since it’s not trying to travel anywhere. Think of it as a leak in a tap, as opposed to a tap being turned on.

RF: This is the tap being turned on in the analogy. For a wireless device to connect to another wireless device, it must send a signal to that device, which is then converted in to text, audio, picture etc. These frequencies include cellular networks, WIFI, Bluetooth, RFID, NFC, GPS. These signals can be transmitted at many different frequencies (Hertz) and power levels (Watts / Volts). An example of this would be a WIFI signal, which typically travels below 100 feet. Another signal may be a cell phone signal which would typically travel several miles. Electronics will need to generate different power levels, depending on the distance they they intend to travel.

Is EMF dangerous?

People who use electronic devices frequently, particularly those who hold them close to their body, are becoming increasingly concerned regarding this risks associated with long term EMF exposure. There is a growing body of evidence that long term exposure to non-ionizing radiation, may contribute to oxidative stress and cellular damage, which can in turn lead to many health problems. Current scientific studies are substantiating this concern, although it's worth mentioning that this is a divisive topic, and more long term studies are needed to definitely rule on this issue. We suggest that caution is best exercised until more is known on the long term effects of NIR radiation. 

Unfortunately for many, electronic devices that we now use daily, haven’t been around long enough for long term studies to be made available. Meaning that studies are not yet able to establish the long term effects, given that this can take up to 20 years or more. It logically makes sense, that we limit ourselves to exposure to these EMFS, until there is more definitive evidence surrounding the long term safety.

How to stay safe from EMF

What If I can't avoid EMF?

Maintaining a sensible approach to EMF Danger

Keeping a level head when it comes to EMF exposure can be tricky, especially if you are situated close to a cell tower, or are otherwise electromagnetic hypersensitive (EHS).
